The New Market
The new market, a couple of blocks west of the plaza, is
pretty nice. It has a couple of pretty good restaurants upstairs, and the accommodations
are nicer than the old market. They are also a lot more expensive to
rent! The market took YEARS to finish -- sort of a WPA project for
Corozal -- and a lot of people have observed that the Town Board could have
completely renovated the old market for a lot less money, and retained the handy
proximity it had to the fish wharf.
But there was money to be made (by someone) --
construction, and the sale of the land occupied by the old market!! Yet
another possible reason why the old Town Board was not re-elected. At any
rate, here below are a couple of pictures of the new market. The parking
is certainly better, and on Fridays, vendors set up tents in the parking
lot. That doesn't help the parking, but it sure makes the new market
exciting.

The awnings allow for expansion, shade from the morning sun,
and protection from a sudden squall.
Below, the hall runs the full length of the building.
The vendors put a lot of stuff there, and it's very cozy for shoppers!

bunch of unlabeled pictures here.
New. Funny! We
had a discussion on LocalGringos about Progresso Heights about pictures, and the
PG marketers have recently added hundreds of pictures -- still all
unlabeled. For a better presentation, look here.
