How you can get to Belize

Fly to Belize City, and then...  There are daily flights from Houston and Miami by Continental and Taca, and U.S. Air. Once here, you can fly to all major destinations on the local airlines.  You can rent a car, but the tariffs are steep -- usually about $100 US / day.  Econo-tourists take the busses, which are frequent and cheap.  For example, the express bus from Belize City to Corozal is 9 dollah.  ($1 US = Two Belizean dollah)

Or...  (much cheaper)

Fly to Cancun, and then... You can take a charter to Cancun during the off-season for about $300.  Then you can take a super deluxe bus to Corozal for about $15 US!  Or you can spend the night in the Hotel Margueritas (downtown, from $43US -- ask for the Senior rate) and fly to Chetumal the next morning for about $110 US.   If you can't get a seat on a superbus (below) after you arrive, spend the night at the Margueritas and go the next morniing. The "First Class" bus is not really first class -- you'll be lucky to get any sleep at all.  (Note: You can't reserve a bus seat in advance by phone or e-mail, you have to be here. )

New.  Now (July 2009) You can fly from Cancun to Belize.  See that here.

Bus to Belize. Mexico has super luxury busses to almost everywhere. TV, A/C, sleeper seats, toilets, the works.  The trip from Brownsville to Chetumal  takes about 36 hours, and costs about $100 US.  Then you can take a bus to Corozal and visit us at Charlotte's Web!  New.  If you're worried about this mode of travel, look here for some reassurance.

Drive.  If you're young and/or adventuresome, you can drive.  Or, if your old and nervous (like me) you can hire somebody to drive.  Read our letters on driving, and then call or write us about getting a driver!  We discuss the ins and outs of bringing a vehicle into the country here

+ If you're going to drive, check out Drive Mexico.  Mexican Insurance - Buy and print Mexican auto insurance policies immediately on your own printer. Can also insure boats, motorcycles, trailers, RVs and properties (home, condo, apartment etc)

NEWHere is a new website, featuring an American company which issues Mexican insurance.  Check it out!.

+ We have added a FAQ on driving thru Mexico, here.

+ Read the Belizean Chronicles to see how Rick came back to Belize in late 2004

IMPORTANT:  If you decide to drive, do not, under any circumstances, attempt to smuggle any kind of firearm into Mexico!

The Yucatan Express.  You can drive to Tampa and take a ferry to Merida, and then drive to Belize, all for VERY reasonable prices!!  See their website here, and read one person's account of their trip here!

Bulletin:  The Yucatan Express is not running this Fall/Winter 2004.   Reasons:  high port fees and poor channel dredging.  They hope to start running again in Fall/Winter 2005.   By that time, they should go to CANCUN!!

Newer: (Nov 2005) The Yucatan Express never did run again!  The Govt of Quintana Roo never did dredge the port out at Cancun and the Cruise Ship folks eventually gave up.  They are planning a ferry from Louisiana to Vera Cruz but that is still in the offing.

Newest: (Apr 2007)  Click on the YE address above if you want to read a story of gross governmental incompetence and malfeasance.  In a nutshell, the City of Portland destroyed the cruise line.  Read it here.
